Greater Manchester basketball club
Greater Manchester Community Basketball was formed in the late 1990s with the express objective of giving children of all ages and backgrounds the chance to better themselves through basketball. A charity and non-profit organisation, it has achieved enormous success with its community and elite programmes. Perhaps better known as the Manchester Magic and Manchester Mystics, it has developed dozens of elite players and won more than 80 national titles at senior and junior level. Many Magic and Mystics players have won international honours, while a growing number continue to pursue their basketball and academic careers in the prestigious United States college system.
However, what GMCB is really proud of is its reputation as a club that puts people before winning and which strives to provide every club member with an opportunity to reach their potential not just in basketball, but in life.
Education and the development of life-skills that transcend basketball are at the heart of the club’s philosophy. Over 50 of our boys and girls have achieved athletic and academic scholarships to American and UK colleges where they have been able to continue their ‘dual-education’ as student-athletes. In addition, we run a joint-scholarship programme with the University of Salford and Manchester University which allows some of our youngsters to study in their own city whilst playing for our senior teams. Likewise, during their time with us, our youngsters are consistently supported to develop transversal skills that will serve them beyond basketball. This include contributing to the running of our community programmes as administrators, coaches, referees and generally volunteering to support the running of the club. As a result of this parallel education their preparation for ‘life outside’ basketball is supported. In fact, the majority of our current staff and coaches are former players. GMCB is much more than a basketball club. It is a community asset.
